MEDITATION TIP OF THE WEEK
…IS A SERIES OF SHORT, EASY TO REMEMBER, AND BASIC TIPS ON MEDITATION. PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK, IS IT HELPFUL?
You’ve got everything that you need to meditate, right here, right now.
People tell me that they can’t meditate for the following reasons:
- They don’t know how.
- They get too distracted.
- They have too many thoughts in their mind.
- They’re not “spiritual.”
- They don’t have the time.
Sorry, none of these excuses work with me. Why not? Let’s see…
How Do You Meditate?
Many people think that to meditate, you have to have some “secret” knowledge or special method.
Since meditation is ultimately about remaining in a state of non-distraction there’s not so much to “do” as there is to “be.” So, if you say that you don’t “know how” to meditate, it’s pretty simple. In fact, you don’t even need to be undistracted to meditate!
Meditation Isn’t About Trying to Rid Your Mind of Thoughts
Some people think that they have to “get rid of their thoughts” in order to meditate. Good luck!
There’s no way that you can push thoughts out of your mind and…that’s not what meditation is about.
Could you imagine how easy it would be to meditate if you didn’t try to get rid of your thoughts? Could you imagine how easy it would be to meditate if you were able to simply sit and meditate while all of your thoughts were allowed to simply come and go?
Meditation Isn’t Necessarily About Being Spiritual
While most spiritual traditions have contemplative or meditative practices, you don’t have to be spiritual to meditate. All you have to be is…human! All you need is your mind. All you need is your breath. However, through the process of meditation, you may find a “spiritual” connection beyond yourself, you may realize that you’re not as separate from others as you’d believed. And you could call that “spiritual.”
You Don’t Need A Lot of Time to Learn to Meditate
One challenge that I have is around time; time management, time with family, time to relax, and time to meditate. Sound familiar?
If you’re like many people, you’re pretty busy and trying to make time to meditate can be challenging.
Part of the problem with “having time to meditate” might be due to your idea of what you need to do to meditate. Granted, we’ve discussed a lot on this site why you need to have a formal practice. A formal practice gives you the stability and experience to have a solid foundation for your meditation. So, yes, it can take some committed time to learn to meditate.
Here’s the magic; once you’ve learned to be stable in your meditation practice, then anytime is the right time to meditate.
But if you don’t have a lot of time to practice formally, that’s not a reason to avoid learning how to meditate. Start where you are and begin now. Read this post, How to Meditate: Start Where You Are…
