MEDITATION TIP OF THE WEEK

MEDITATION TIP IS A WEEKLY SERIES OF EASY TO REMEMBER, SHORT AND BASIC TIPS ON MEDITATION. PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK, IS IT HELPFUL?

In the previous weeks, the “Tip of the Week” has focused a lot on how to meditate in our daily lives. This week’s tip will be similar; meditate under water, or on a tightrope!!

When we begin to get comfortable with our meditation practice we can get lazy about it and only practice under the best of circumstances. But, that’s not what meditation is about. It’s about learning to engage our meditative mind no matter what we’re doing!

Last summer I biked a bicycle ride called the Colorado Triple Bypass, a 120-mile, three-pass, 10,000-foot elevation gain one-day ride not for the weak-of-heart…or mind! I shared this in a post last summer titled, Meditating on Mountains of Suffering. In that post, I related how while biking up a steep climb, I realized that I’d lost the connection to my meditative mind when I needed it the most.

Recently I’ve taken this “meditate anywhere” philosophy into my workouts at the gym. It’s amazing how the quality of a workout, or of anything that involves pushing one’s limits, can change – even be enhanced – when one brings the practice of meditation into the picture. Whether that’s biking up a mountain, swimming or…shoveling snow, bringing one’s mind to the task, not the distracted mind but the clear, meditative mind, can make such a difference.

Regardless of where we are, we can meditate, bring our meditative mind to the present, and engage fully in whatever it is that we’re doing. Try it. Practice it. Make sure that there’s nowhere in your life where you allow yourself not to be meditative. That is, don’t give in to the tendency to dismiss some activities as too hard, too involved, too boring, too…whatever, to meditate. If you have to, meditate under water! Allow no special exemptions for any activity, and you’ll find yourself excelling in your practice of meditation. Give it a try!
